The Saint-Imier watchmaking establishment is founded by Auguste Agassiz, brother of the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz. Auguste and his two partners made and sold watches with crown-wheel escapements similar to those produced by the Swiss watchmaking industry in general. In 1846 Agassiz became the head of the company. thanks to his family contacts in the United States, it was hugely successful abroad. 1852 Ernest Francillion, Auuste Agassiz’s nephew joined Saint – Imier. He was a qualified economist and slowly took over the business.
1867 was a turning point for the Longines factory that was based in Saint-Imier. As the first 20A movement was produced. This calibre has an anchor escapement, as well as a pendant widing and setting mechanism. This won an award at the University Exhibition in Paris. 1878 the chronograph movement with the 20H calibre was made. It was patented by Alfred Lugrin. This was the first precise timing mechanism produced by Longines.
