Elliot Brown History

Ian Elliot was co-founder of Animal back in ’88, and built the brand up from a single, innovative, functional product – an ‘unbreakable’ watch-strap.

Alex Brown turned down a job at Cartier because it sounded more interesting to establish Animal’s watch department, where he stayed for seventeen years.

Elliot & Brown immerse themselves in a coastal playground where salt water, sand and harsh knocks place huge demands on any watch.Distilling almost 20 years of experience from the world of extreme sports they threw off their career comfort blankets to develop a range of durable watches that could travel on every adventure, through every wave and look good on any occasion.Every Elliot Brown is the result of 1000’s of hours spent obsessing over the smallest details; refining, improving, inventing, and testing. These award-winning watches shrug off harsh elements and are relied upon for ocean crossings, mountain rescues, and just about any kind of extreme or arduous adventure. Each watch must pass a rigorous testing regime including immersion in water at 200m or 300m. It’s typical of the lengths this British brand goes to, in making sure each one is ready for duty in the office or on your next adventure.
“They’re built to last for years, not fashion seasons. There’s something comforting, putting on a watch that’s collected a few scrapes and scars, each with its own story to tell.”

Bloxworth Collection

A classic ‘tech-diver’ chronograph designed for those who like a little more function, the Bloxworth is a true go-anywhere, do-anything watch.Available in twelve styles and three case finishes including black, sandblasted gunmetal, and brushed and polished stainless steel. Interchangeable strapping options include canvas, solid steel bracelets, and pebbled leather. The Bloxworth’s Swiss-made 13-jewel chronograph movement has a three-year battery life and is secured inside our proprietary shock-absorbing steel movement housing. The 44mm diameter case is machined from solid 316L marine-grade stainless steel case and individually pressure tested to 150m twice during construction then placed in a water-filled pressure vessel at 200m and finished with a hardened anti-reflective mineral crystal for clear vision in all conditions. The dial, hands and 0-20 markers on the bezel all have long-lasting Superluminova detailing that provides outstanding legibility.
The outer edge of the bezel is machined for confident grip, and only rotates anticlockwise, so it can only show a shorter remaining time if it’s accidentally knocked. The crown and push-buttons are knurled for superior grip in harsh conditions. The caseback is bolted down, not threaded, because it’s the best way of holding the shock-absorbing movement housing accurately inside the case. The screwdriver that’s included with every watch can be used to adjust the length of the steel bracelets and remove the solid stainless steel strap bars. Bracelets are constructed from 316L stainless steel with solid screw-in link-pins for maximum strength. The heavy-duty clasp has micro-adjustment to fine-tune the fit or extend quickly and elegantly for use over a wetsuit.

Tyneham Collection

A very wearable automatic equipped with exquisitely considered details. Everything you need and nothing you don’t packed into a 41mm case so proportionally balanced that it demands a second glance.A watch inspired by one of our favourite UK coastal retreats and built to thrive in harsh conditions. Competence is delivered in many guises and there’s something incredibly satisfying in knowing you’re wearing an object of such detail but ultimately capable. Each Tyneham comes in two styles. A solid steel back precision engraved with hand drawn contours from Tyneham Cap on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast or a limited edition numbered display back revealing the movement and custom rotor through a sapphire window (denoted by a D for display in its model code). The Miyota 9130 Japanese automatic is a beautiful piece of engineering chosen for reliability, but as it’s inherently more delicate than it’s quartz cousins, we built a two-stage shock absorption system to protect it. The first line of defence is a stainless steel movement cage, surrounded by our proprietary shock absorber allowing the whole assembly to float inside the outer case. Secondary shock resistance comes in the form of the balance staff shock protection system built into the movement. It means that although it’s an auto the Tyneham will take the kind of punishment Elliot Brown is renowned for. The Miyota 9130 also hacks and is hand-windable.A recessed 2mm sapphire crystal is protected by a perfectly proportioned stainless steel outer bezel. That would normally be the end of the story but not for us. Every Tyneham bezel is case-hardened so it’ll remain largely scratch free for years as it’s six times harder than marine grade stainless.
The crown is ergonomically positioned away from the wrist and neatly recessed into the case for increased durability. We’ve knurled it with a parallel hobnail design for optimal grip and finished each one to match the case. Triple seals ensure it remains fully sealed in all positions. At 1h on the dial, there’s a discreet 40h power reserve indicating the state of the mainspring winding and each dial has been carefully paired with precision printing or raised metallic indices to create 5 completely different stories that make the collection. There are two styles of hands, both inspired by traditionally bold instrumentation. Each style complimenting the dial and colour palette and a first for Elliot Brown is the white SuperLuminova detailing that glows cool blue. Each and every watch has passed our unforgiving pressure test in water at 300m. It’s just one of the inventive and well publicised tests we carry out to make sure that our watches are highly capable and as reliable as our exacting standards require for us to put our names on them.A refinement of the solid strap attachment bars means strap changes are simply managed with a single screwdriver. The Tyneham strap lineup includes a smart soft grey woolen felt edition – incredibly stylish whilst remarkably durable. All other Elliot Brown straps fit the Tyneham which means there are literally 100’s of combinations for that special custom look.

Broadstone Collection

All the ruggedised features Elliot Brown is renowned for plus the addition of the perfect adventurers companion, a bold GMT/UTC 24h hand to keep an eye on the time in a second time zone. Perfect when your travels take you offshore or a loved one resides in a different country. (UTC stands for Universal Time Coordinated)

Powered by a reliable Ronda 505-24h calibre Swiss quartz movement, the Broadstone collection was inspired by our partnership with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and includes a host of subtle details we learned first hand seeing how the 2015-16 Canford Clipper Race crew Limited Edition watches performed as they were put through extremes by skippers and crew on their global ocean-going adventure.

Launching in August with the Broadstone 505-001 Clipper Race UTC Limited Edition this model is limited to just 1000 pieces worldwide – each one with a beautifully detailed, uniquely numbered case back carrying the Clipper Race insignia.

The dial features the subtle Elliot Brown/Clipper Race trademark design of green hour markers for starboard and red markers for port around the outer reaches of the dial, with distinctive black and chrome detailing complimenting the smart go-anywhere credentials.

The tapering solid stainless outer bezel is deeply engraved with 24 hour numerals linking with the UTC hand on the dial – boldly distinguished with a bright red broad arrow tip.

The Clipper Race UTC model is differs from the rest of the collection with the UTC insignia denoting the timing standard adopted by Clipper Race crews and officials.

All other models are distinguished by having GMT printed GMT on the dial.

Every detail has been considered and re-considered or re-designed until every component gels with every other. It’s a fine balancing act that can keep us up well into the nights but when the final CAD images are revealed, we instantly know when our work is complete. It’s an instinct we’ve adopted from the start and it’s the reason every Elliot Brown has a purity and unique character that’s the result of years of experience.

Broadstone collection highlights include: Swiss Ronda movement caliber 505-24h, 24h UTC/GMT hand; internal rotating timing bezel operated by the upper crown; crowns recessed into the case for protection; shock protection internal movement shield system; solid marine grade 316L case; fitted custom rubber strap with our signature wide tongue stainless buckle; triple sealed crowns that won’t leak even in the adjust position; 2.5mm anti reflective sapphire crystal; pressure tested in water at 200m; bolted down case back for a perfect seal. A screwdriver is included for easy strap changes using the solid screw in strap bars. The Clipper Race UTC model also comes with an additional black Duck Canvas deployant strap specifically made with a red contrast stitch for this model.

The Universal Time Coordinated standard came about in 1960 when the UK and USA synched atomic time signals to create the new standard, effectively replacing the meridian time line that passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Of course the term GMT for Greenwich Mean Time remains a traditional constant with a wonderful history that acts as a kind of timing anchor line running through Great Britain.

Kimmeridge Collection

We’ve been asked so often to make a credible, durable ladies range, it was about time we made it a reality. Everyone agreed our best-selling Canford was the right starting point but the challenge was always going to be working out what elements would constitute the perfect Elliot Brown ladies watch? With a very patient and understanding designer we set to work and after nearly fifty versions of dial design (all black and white at this point) we finally agreed on ‘the one’. That design made it through prototyping and into production without a single change – making sure that our design ideas come to life as intended with no watering down or focus group muddling.Watch design is a fine art; a delicate balancing act where the smallest alteration to something as simple as a line weight can throw out an otherwise perfectly balanced design. The Kimmeridge tested every part of our process but on seeing the end result, it was absolutely worth the effort. The result is a perfect example of the ‘less is more’ principle and it was this design language that enabled us to create a watch so simple yet elegant.Gone are our oversized instrumentation-style dial graphics and in it’s place comes slender simplicity, imparting it’s elegance on the collection.
A muted palette of softly coloured leathers, durable bracelets, and graceful dials offer a wide choice from just nine models – all carefully curated to compliment a wide variety of wardrobe colours.Despite the elegant exterior, each Kimmeridge is built up to the same standard shared by every other Elliot Brown watch. Inside the finely brushed and polished marine grade stainless cases, lies a Swiss made 5-jewel Ronda calibre 715 quartz movement, housed in our unique shock absorbing housing. The crown is triple sealed to prevent dust and moisture entering the watch even when its pulled out into the adjust position and every watch has been tested in water at 200m.The dials are clear and easy to read with a custom date window at 4 o’clock and bright luminous ink flooding the hands. We hope you enjoy choosing a Kimmeridge and if you’re finding it hard to choose between models, an additional strap can completely change the look and give you almost two completely different watches. All straps are interchangeable using our easy-change screw in bar system.
